Samorah Dillard

–

Chicago, Illinois

HER STORY
On February 14, 1962, while the world celebrated Valentine's Day, Chicago welcomed a woman who would
spend her life showing love every day of the year. Born to Mr. Frank Dillard Sr. and Mrs. Diane Dillard,
Samorah "Candy" Dillard was the youngest of the Dillard family. From the very beginning, there was
something special about her.
Before long, everyone knew her by another name—Candy. It fit her perfectly. She was sweet, genuine,
generous, and impossible not to love. Like candy itself, she had a way of brightening someone's day without
even trying.
Candy never met a stranger. Everyone became family once she met them. Whether she was wishing
someone "Merry Christmas," saying "Happy Holidays," or simply asking how they were doing, she made
people feel seen, valued, and loved.
She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, traveling, celebrating with family, and laughing until everyone around
her was laughing too. She loved life, and she wanted everyone around her to enjoy it as much as she did.
Candy graduated from Fenger High School before beginning a faithful career with the South Suburban
Post Office, where she served for more than 30 years until her retirement. Retirement simply gave her
more time to do what she loved most—spending precious moments with her beloved grandchildren and
serving others.
Helping people wasn't something Candy did from time to time—it was simply who she was. Whenever she
heard about food giveaways, gas assistance, or community resources throughout Chicago, she immediately
picked up the phone. She wanted everyone to know. She celebrated every opportunity to help someone
else.
Even while carrying her own burdens and health challenges, Candy never stopped thinking about others.
She reminded us that kindness costs nothing but can mean everything.
HER FAITH:
Samorah accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. During the summer of 1973, at the
age of eleven, she was baptized at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where her walk with Christ began to
flourish.
Later in life, she became a faithful member of South Park Baptist Church, where she continued to worship
and grow in her faith. More than anything, Candy loved the Lord with all her heart. Her faith was evident
not only in the words she spoke but in the life she lived. Her kindness, compassion, generosity, and
willingness to help others were daily expressions of God's love working through her.
Her life preached a sermon without saying a word:
Love people.
Help people.
Laugh often.
Share what you have.
Leave every person better than you found them.
That is exactly what Candy did.
HER SWEET LEGACY:
Candy's greatest treasure was her family.
She leaves to celebrate her life and carry her love forward: her daughter, Lenora Diane Dillard; her son,
Antoine Leonard Williams; her beloved grandchildren, Ariyanna Shaniya Magett and Karson Magett; her brother,
Frank Dillard and his wife, Vanishia, her sisters, Jeanette Walters and her husband, Kevin, and Paulzetta Dillard her
brother, Tommy Dillard, her aunt, Paula Dawkins along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, her church
family, and countless cherished friends whose lives were enriched by her.
IF CANDY COULD SPEAK TODAY:
"Don't spend so much time worrying.
Call your family.
Help somebody.
Laugh a little louder.
Dance whenever you get the chance.
Tell people you love them while they can still hear you.10-4
